Bankrupt

A single tear slowly trickles

To the corner of your forced smile

And the words spill unbridled

As from a defendant put on trial

~

Though no guilty verdict was rendered here

Because no innocence was lost

In fact we both found what we were looking for

And were willing to pay regardless of cost

~

Had the price tag been properly displayed

So that the buyer could potentially beware

Perhaps the purchase would not have been made

Or at least the fees could have been shared

~

But instead we spendthrifts scoffed the expense

And severely lacking funds in the coffer

We surrendered every last shred of prudence

And each accepted the others’ offer

~

So there we stood back to back bankrupt

Neither listening to each others’ two cents

And in the midst of this apologetic build up

Came to realize what was lost in this investment
