Riddled

You’ve noticed the quiver

from around the corner

more often than you’d like

to admit or remember.

You’ve seen the bow

from behind the trees

and noticed the archer

taking aim on his knees.

You’ve sensed the tension

of the tightening string

that comes right before

the arrow sings

with intent through the air.

You always parry

in just enough time

to narrowly avert

the inevitable impact.

Taking a hit almost every time

yet keeping the vital organ intact

Most of the wounds

superficial and shallow

but you leave the shafts in

to avoid feeling hollow

and for fear of exsanguination .

This has gone on way too long

Now the time’s come, like it or not

to pull the errant arrows

and stand perfectly still

so Cupid can get off a good clean shot.
